Among various world famous Vagdevi temples, Basara Gyana Saraswathi can be named after the temple in Kashmir. There’s a story in prevalence that this temple was built by Vyasa Maharshi. There’s an argument that the name Basara got transformed from Vyasapuri – Vyasar to Basara. Just because of its endowment, it has become a tradition for the people not only from our state, but also from the other states to perform “Akshara Sweekaaram” for their kids. The specialty of the Saraswathi idol present here is that it is made of sand. This temple is situated in Adilabad district near Nizamabad city on the banks of river Godavari at Basara.

It’s after Godavari pushkaras importance and publicity of this holy place has increased to attract many devotees. Many Kamma families are visiting this temple of Shri Gyana Saraswathi, the mother of education to perform “Aksharaabhyaasam” for their kids from far away places. They are facing here many difficulties due to lack of proper food and boarding facilities. People of certain castes have arranged for “Nityaannadaanam” and boarding facilities for their brothers long back. Upon noticing this, with a decision to fill in this gap, Kammas of Basara and Nizamabad district came forward with an amount of Rs.21,00,000.00 (Rupees Twenty One lakhs only) and purchased an acre of land. It is resolved to construct 66 rooms with all modern facilities along with a dining hall required for ‘Nityaannadaanam’.
